MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH IN CHAPPAQUA, NY + NEW CANAAN, CT
You love your kids. You just can't turn your mind off.
Therapy for moms dealing with anxiety, constant worry, and the pressure of holding it all together.
SOUND FAMILIAR?
From the outside, you look like you're handling it. Inside, you're lying awake running through every "what if." Scary thoughts about your baby pop into your head and you can't tell anyone. You check, double-check, and research until you're exhausted. You snap at the people you love, then feel guilty about it. And you keep wondering if this is just what motherhood is supposed to feel like.
It's not. Anxiety is one of the most common struggles moms face, and one of the least talked about. It doesn't mean you're a bad mom. It usually means you've been carrying too much, for too long, without enough support.
You don't have to keep white-knuckling it.
How therapy works
So much of this chapter is carried quietly.
Therapy gives you a place where you get to be the person being supported.
We start by getting specific about your anxiety. When it spikes, what sets it off, what you do to try to make it stop. Most moms have never mapped this out, and just seeing the pattern takes some of its power away.
From there, we build tools you can use in real life, not just in session. How to catch a worry spiral before it takes over the whole night. What to do with a scary thought besides Google it or ask for reassurance again. How to get through the witching hour without losing it. We practice them, adjust what isn't working, and keep what is.
And we make room for the stuff underneath: the guilt, the pressure to do it all perfectly, the parts of you that got lost somewhere between the diaper bag and the carpool line.
Maternal mental health work at Terra is led by Suzanne Esposito, LCSW, who is trained through Postpartum Support International and brings 14 years of clinical experience in psychiatric settings. She's also a mom.
Terra offers maternal mental health therapy in our Chappaqua, NY and New Canaan, CT locations, and virtually across New York and Connecticut.
Having a baby changes your relationship, too.
No one really warns you. You and your partner are running on no sleep, dividing up feedings and diaper changes, and somehow keeping score without meaning to. Conversations turn into logistics. You feel like roommates, or like you're the only one who notices what needs to get done. And when you're anxious, it's even harder to let them help, or to ask.
This is one of the most common strains new parents face, and it's not a sign something is wrong with your relationship. Therapy can help you sort out what you need, say it in a way that lands, and feel like a team again.
